She Does
A Skins fanfiction by LaceyLuther
----
Effy stopped walking at the end of her street, glancing at the empty space outside her house. Dad wasn’t home then, Tone might be in though, not that he’d stop her from skiving of course but he’d expect her to stay with him. Effy ignored this thought as she started moving again, unearthly black school shoes thumping softly on the ground as she did so.
She pulled back the sleeve of her school jumper, a horrid bright blue thing that she personally hated, this motion displayed a clear black watch; a Swatch watch she’d been given for her birthday. It had only taken her roughly a twenty five minutes to walk home…it took five minutes in the car. She let her arm fall to her side, nearing her house now she could hear blasting music and laughter, female by the sounds of it.
Effy rolled her eyes, stepping through the gap in the front wall – the place the gate was meant to be – into her front garden, she paused and dragged her bag off her shoulder, unzipping it and fishing out her house keys. Her bag was slung back onto her shoulder and she took three more steps to end up right outside the red front door. Rolling her eyes to herself as she heard a high pitched giggle from the other side of the door, she slid the key into the lock and turned giving the door a hard shove.
She slammed it shut, glancing into the living room to see Tony with a few of his friends, posh female friends. Effy grimaced and shook her head; obviously the crash hadn’t knocked some sense into him. She stomped up the stairs and headed into her own room, a fleeting smile on her lips as she took in the familiarity of her own space.
It took her next to no time to get changed out of her school gear; still she knew she’d probably end up being late for Spencer anyway. Then again, she highly doubted he’d be on time anyway. She slipped into a pair of black chequered Vans before she walked out her room, surprised to see Tony and that blonde posh bird kissing on the landing.
She stood for a few seconds, watching them kiss, Tony pulled away from Abigail before Effy had lost interest, he looked at his sister and gave her a small smirk. Effy rolled her eyes at that, pushing past them and jogging down the stairs to the front door. She paused as she turned the yale lock between thin fingers, turning her head slightly to look back up the stairs “Wanker!” She screamed, this being directed at Tony of course.
With that strange outburst she walked out the front door and shut it behind her in her usual gentle manner. From her house it only took her a few minutes to get into the town centre and from there it was roughly a three minute walk to the Starbucks she and Spencer usually met at.
She walked briskly out of the housing complex she lived in, heading to the nearest bus stop that would take her towards the town. As luck would have it the very bus she needed was pulling up the stop as she rounded the corner, she paused for a second before breaking out into a somehow dignified run; only just managing to catch the bus in time,
Five minutes exactly was all it took for the bus to drive along the near empty suburban streets into the outskirts of the town centre, Effy got off the bus and walked the remainder of the gap between Starbucks and her house, she got there only a few minutes late. To her mild surprise Spencer was already sat at one of the window tables, he smiled when he saw her – that typical Spencer smile, all lips, all eyes.
He gestured for her to come over, which she did, walking slowly at first before she naturally sped up slightly. She glanced at Spencer before sitting down at the table “Why did you want to see me then?” He asked, watching her as she ran a hand slowly through her hair. She didn’t say anything of course – her only response was a small gentle shrug.
Her eyes wandered away from Spencer, he was talking about something now – a rave he’d been to the night before, that would explain his washed out look, he was almost definitely hungover. Effy’s attentions were back him at last. “…
Effy wasn’t surprised by the invite, ever since that night the year before she had been spending a lot of time with Spencer, Josh and their friends. She was almost part of ‘the gang’, a silly name given to the handful of people who were always at the best raves in
They sat in silence for a few minutes before Spencer noticed their lack of Starbucks coffee “The usual then?” He asked, he didn’t wait for an answer knowing he would get one. Instead he stood from his chair and weaved his way through the other tables to get to the counter. From there he ordered a hot chocolate and an Americano. The former for Effy and the latter for himself.
It took roughly five minutes for the drinks to be handed to him, having already paid he grasped the handles and returned to the table, and as a result; Effy. Effy took her hot chocolate from Spencer without a glance; she looked into the see through glass and frowned lightly.
“Listen Effy,” Effy lifted her eyes to Spencer, he looked tired for the first time since she’d walked in. “I have to go in a little bit, but since you’re up for this rave, come to mine around nine, yeah?” Spencer asked, eyebrows raised slightly as he wiped froth from his top lip.
Effy smirked slightly, Spencer’s house amused him, he acted like such a middle-classer and yet he was a wannabe rich boy, like Josh. She shrugged slightly, a movement Spencer took to mean she agreed to what he suggested. Happy now he sank down in his seat slightly, watching Effy as she drank her hot chocolate obviously not caring about the heat of the liquid.
He inhaled slightly and took a drink of his Americano; Effy took out her lighter, which was always hidden away in one of her pockets, and flicked the flame into life, she stared at it for a second – a small smile forming on her lips. She moved the lighter very slightly, so the flame was directly under the glass handle of her hot chocolate mug, she got a few tuts from onlookers around them.
Both Spencer and Effy watched the flame, bored now Effy pulled her thumb off the lighter and put it away back into her pocket, there was now a black spot on her glass. She was pleased, there was something horrifically beautiful about the carnage fire caused. Even tiny things like that black spot was lovely, or that was Effy’s opinion anyway.
Spencer sighed slightly and stood from his chair for the second time “I better run,” He said, his tone suggesting he didn’t want to leave, although Effy wondered if it was because of her or because of whatever it was he had to go off and do. “I have a job interview.” He muttered as if in response to Effy’s unvoiced question.
Effy nodded slowly and stood also, they shared a look before Spencer led the way out of the coffee house, they stood at the door as Spencer said bye, he gave her a light kiss on the lips before leaving her. Effy was leaning against the wall, his eyes on Spencer’s back as he walked away; she shook her head, wondering what to do now.
