----

Effy stopped walking at the end of her street, glancing at the empty space outside her house. Dad wasn’t home then, Tone might be in though, not that he’d stop her from skiving of course but he’d expect her to stay with him. Effy ignored this thought as she started moving again, unearthly black school shoes thumping softly on the ground as she did so.

She pulled back the sleeve of her school jumper, a horrid bright blue thing that she personally hated, this motion displayed a clear black watch; a Swatch watch she’d been given for her birthday. It had only taken her roughly a twenty five minutes to walk home…it took five minutes in the car. She let her arm fall to her side, nearing her house now she could hear blasting music and laughter, female by the sounds of it.

Effy rolled her eyes, stepping through the gap in the front wall – the place the gate was meant to be – into her front garden, she paused and dragged her bag off her shoulder, unzipping it and fishing out her house keys. Her bag was slung back onto her shoulder and she took three more steps to end up right outside the red front door. Rolling her eyes to herself as she heard a high pitched giggle from the other side of the door, she slid the key into the lock and turned giving the door a hard shove.

She slammed it shut, glancing into the living room to see Tony with a few of his friends, posh female friends. Effy grimaced and shook her head; obviously the crash hadn’t knocked some sense into him. She stomped up the stairs and headed into her own room, a fleeting smile on her lips as she took in the familiarity of her own space.

It took her next to no time to get changed out of her school gear; still she knew she’d probably end up being late for Spencer anyway. Then again, she highly doubted he’d be on time anyway. She slipped into a pair of black chequered Vans before she walked out her room, surprised to see Tony and that blonde posh bird kissing on the landing.

She stood for a few seconds, watching them kiss, Tony pulled away from Abigail before Effy had lost interest, he looked at his sister and gave her a small smirk. Effy rolled her eyes at that, pushing past them and jogging down the stairs to the front door. She paused as she turned the yale lock between thin fingers, turning her head slightly to look back up the stairs “Wanker!” She screamed, this being directed at Tony of course.

With that strange outburst she walked out the front door and shut it behind her in her usual gentle manner. From her house it only took her a few minutes to get into the town centre and from there it was roughly a three minute walk to the Starbucks she and Spencer usually met at.

She walked briskly out of the housing complex she lived in, heading to the nearest bus stop that would take her towards the town. As luck would have it the very bus she needed was pulling up the stop as she rounded the corner, she paused for a second before breaking out into a somehow dignified run; only just managing to catch the bus in time,

Five minutes exactly was all it took for the bus to drive along the near empty suburban streets into the outskirts of the town centre, Effy got off the bus and walked the remainder of the gap between Starbucks and her house, she got there only a few minutes late. To her mild surprise Spencer was already sat at one of the window tables, he smiled when he saw her – that typical Spencer smile, all lips, all eyes.

He gestured for her to come over, which she did, walking slowly at first before she naturally sped up slightly. She glanced at Spencer before sitting down at the table “Why did you want to see me then?” He asked, watching her as she ran a hand slowly through her hair. She didn’t say anything of course – her only response was a small gentle shrug.

Her eyes wandered away from Spencer, he was talking about something now – a rave he’d been to the night before, that would explain his washed out look, he was almost definitely hungover. Effy’s attentions were back him at last. “…osh and I are planning on havin’ a rave at the sports club tonight,” Effy raised her brows slightly. “You gonna come or what?” Spencer asked it.

Effy wasn’t surprised by the invite, ever since that night the year before she had been spending a lot of time with Spencer, Josh and their friends. She was almost part of ‘the gang’, a silly name given to the handful of people who were always at the best raves in Bristol. She nodded slightly “Yes.” Was her feeble reply.

They sat in silence for a few minutes before Spencer noticed their lack of Starbucks coffee “The usual then?” He asked, he didn’t wait for an answer knowing he would get one. Instead he stood from his chair and weaved his way through the other tables to get to the counter. From there he ordered a hot chocolate and an Americano. The former for Effy and the latter for himself.

It took roughly five minutes for the drinks to be handed to him, having already paid he grasped the handles and returned to the table, and as a result; Effy. Effy took her hot chocolate from Spencer without a glance; she looked into the see through glass and frowned lightly.

“Listen Effy,” Effy lifted her eyes to Spencer, he looked tired for the first time since she’d walked in. “I have to go in a little bit, but since you’re up for this rave, come to mine around nine, yeah?” Spencer asked, eyebrows raised slightly as he wiped froth from his top lip.

Effy smirked slightly, Spencer’s house amused him, he acted like such a middle-classer and yet he was a wannabe rich boy, like Josh. She shrugged slightly, a movement Spencer took to mean she agreed to what he suggested. Happy now he sank down in his seat slightly, watching Effy as she drank her hot chocolate obviously not caring about the heat of the liquid.

He inhaled slightly and took a drink of his Americano; Effy took out her lighter, which was always hidden away in one of her pockets, and flicked the flame into life, she stared at it for a second – a small smile forming on her lips. She moved the lighter very slightly, so the flame was directly under the glass handle of her hot chocolate mug, she got a few tuts from onlookers around them.

Both Spencer and Effy watched the flame, bored now Effy pulled her thumb off the lighter and put it away back into her pocket, there was now a black spot on her glass. She was pleased, there was something horrifically beautiful about the carnage fire caused. Even tiny things like that black spot was lovely, or that was Effy’s opinion anyway.

Spencer sighed slightly and stood from his chair for the second time “I better run,” He said, his tone suggesting he didn’t want to leave, although Effy wondered if it was because of her or because of whatever it was he had to go off and do. “I have a job interview.” He muttered as if in response to Effy’s unvoiced question.

Effy nodded slowly and stood also, they shared a look before Spencer led the way out of the coffee house, they stood at the door as Spencer said bye, he gave her a light kiss on the lips before leaving her. Effy was leaning against the wall, his eyes on Spencer’s back as he walked away; she shook her head, wondering what to do now.

Not very many people understood Effy Stonem. But he did. Not very many people liked Effy Stonem. But he did. Effy Stonem didn’t like very many people, but she liked him. Lord knows what it was about her that attracted him to her; she was an alarmingly quiet pyromaniac, not the best type of girl out there. Yet he managed to see past her silence, he seemed to deem her worthy of his attention. Or maybe it wasn’t something inside he was seeing, but just all outside, for all her sixteen years Effy was becoming quite the little slut. She didn’t sleep around often of course, but enough to be branded a skank for the rest of her educational days.

She wasn’t sure she’d felt this strongly about a boy before, never ever. She smiled briefly when she thought back to the time she first met him, that fat bloke she was supposed to know the name of introduced them. Spencer. Even the name was sexy. She smirked slightly, her thoughts moving on to the events after her and Spencer’s realise from jail. The van. The drugs. Her friend’s non-stop chatter. The sports club rave. That injection…and then, nothing. Well, not until the hospital…she frowned now eyes glazing over as she got caught deeper in thought.

She’d been told off more than once for daydreaming in class, although when asked to explain her actions she always said nothing. She liked watching as the veins in the foreheads of her teachers started throbbing; it must be a teacher thing because they all did it. “Miss Stonem!” The sharp, curt voice of her Italian teacher failed to grab Effy’s attention, oh she heard it of course – but chose to ignore it.

“Miss Stonem!” It was that voice again; it reminded Effy of chalk scraping against a black board. Something in her brain realised the boys and girls around her were starting to stare, to snigger behind their hands. She didn’t care, she never did – she only wondered how it could still be so amusing even now. Her eyes moved away from the spot of light grey wall, it was meant to be white but the school building was years old, so the dirt coating the walls was likely to be years old too. Somewhere on the wall there was neat handwriting in pink felt tip ‘Johnny 4 Eliza 4eva’ how romantic.

Effy looked at her teacher, Mrs Hudson, a pretty young teacher who was obviously twenty-eight going on forty. A pity really, Effy suspected she’s be quite beautiful if she were high. Effy often thought like that, trying to guess how people looked when they were relaxed, and no one was ever as relaxed as they were when they had drugs running through their system. Again Mrs Hudson spoke Effy’s name, her voice now sounding like wailing cats.

Effy let a small smile tug at the corners of her lips, although it was more smirk that smile. “Yes Miss?” She asked, knowing full well ‘Miss’ instead of ‘Mrs Hudson’ really wound the young teacher up. It really did this time, Mrs Hudson’s cheeks turned a light pink colour, more in annoyance than anything else though, she grabbed Effy’s upper arm roughly and yanked her from her chair. “What is so funny, Miss Stonem?” She demanded, her voice was going high-pitched like it always did when she was annoyed.

Effy squirmed uncharacteristically in Mrs Hudson’s talon like grip; her mouth remained closed this time as was usually the look for the sixteen year old. Mrs Hudson let go of her student and turned her back on her, the other students were watching the entire scene play out. “Were you listening at all to what I was saying, Miss Stonem?” Mrs Hudson asked. Her question met silence as all eyes, a wide range of colours, moved to Effy who was now lowering herself gracefully into her chair.

“I see…” Mrs Hudson muttered to herself, as yet again Effy refused to answer. “Miss Stonem, please stay back after class; I’d like a few words with you.” That was all that was said on the matter. The class moved forward at a steady pace for the remainder of the forty-five minute long period, after which all the students were to run along to the lunch hall.

Effy spent the time zoning in and out of her little world, a strange place indeed; colourful most of the time, but it had a very dark area too, very few saw into this world at all. Spencer was the most important of those ‘very few’, by far. Tony was very jealous, Effy was sure of that as well.

Tony was just the wanker he always was of course, obviously she had been worried about him after the accident but that was a while back now. Almost a year ago that all happened, now she just sat hoping maybe, just maybe being hit by a bus had knocked some sense into Tony. Effy genuinely liked Michelle, she understood her well and Effy felt alright not speaking around her, not that she could if she wanted. Michelle was like a budgie on speed most of the time.

As for the others, Sid, Jal, Maxxie…all of them, Effy didn’t think they had done anything to deserve a friend like Tony. She loved her brother, he was the only family member she had who knew what she was about; didn’t pin her down as an innocent little girl. Besides, he covered for her all the time…she had to love him for that alone.

Effy was ripped from her pleasant world by the unearthly drone of the school bell; lunchtime was like feeding time at the zoo only ten times messier. No one was surprised if a food fight broke out at least once a week here. That was the reason Effy went off school grounds for her lunch, she liked her uniform to be clean, thank you very much. She’d be lucky if she got any lunch at all today though, but of course she would; Mrs Hudson would want something to eat too.

Effy watched as the rest of the students practically ran towards the door, she moved her eyes back to Mrs Hudson who was leaning back on her desk, her brown eyes hidden behind thick red glasses, despite this Effy could slightly make out the large black pupils of her teachers eyes. She had lovely eyes, no doubt about that.

“Now Elizabeth,” Mrs Hudson spoke softly once the last of the students were out the door. Slowly she lifted herself from the desk and walked over to the seat next to Effy’s. “Tell me what’s wrong.”

Effy couldn’t stop the amused smirk from appearing on her thin lips, she shook her head slightly watching Mrs Hudson as she moved. What’s wrong? She’d lost count of how many times she had been asked that over the years, teachers, friends, parents and strangers…they all thought something was wrong. Everything was right with Effy, everything was perfect.

Mrs Hudson didn’t see it this way, obviously because she sighed deeply and leaned forward, resting a hand on Effy’s shoulder. “It’s alright, this is totally confidential.” She said gently. Since when had this hardass wannabe tyrant been so caring? For Effy of all people, the girl who constantly zoned out in classes and did her hardest to wind her up; why one time Effy had even been caught burning the back of the chair in front of her.

Effy shook her head again, she hated this woman, she loathed her because she saw it fitting to act as if she and Effy had been life-long friends. Effy was sixteen, seventeen this year…she didn’t have to hang around for this; she was practically a ‘real adult’ after all. Nearly fully legal. That brought her back to Spencer, she saw his face in her head, a cheeky suave smile on his lips; he wouldn’t have sex with her, she knew this because she had asked him only last week. He said they’d wait until she was old enough.

That had struck her as odd for two reasons; the first being that she was technically old enough, in the eyes of the law at least, and the second was that he didn’t seem like the type to have any problems fucking underage or younger girls. Goes to show she shouldn’t judge books by their beautiful covers. Her attention was brought back to Mrs Hudson by the sound of her chalk-on-blackboard-wailing-cats voice. Effy rolled her eyes, running her tongue along the backs of her clean teeth before she pushed herself up, the chair scraping on the floor as she pushed it back with her knees and shrugged Mrs Hudson’s hand away.

She ignored to angry voice of Mrs Hudson and walked out of the classroom, her bag slung over one shoulder. She stared straight ahead, surprisingly Mrs Hudson didn’t follow her, not that she cared either way. With the sudden feeling of power cam an idea, she didn’t need to be at any of the other classes after this one, she would pass them all easily anyway, so why not skip school for a bit? She hadn’t done it in a while, not since she was caught the last time.

Her father was at work right now, and her mother was staying with her sister because their mum had just died so she could nip home and get a change of clothes, that way it was less likely she’d be considered a truant. With a short nod to herself Effy power walked the rest of the way to the front entrance, thinking twice about it she turned and made her way to the side entrance she knew about; from there she could hop the side wall into the short alley way that ran along that side of the school.

The side entrance to the school was namely used for teachers and janitors, and since both were eating lunch right now, it was fairly easy for Effy to slip outside unnoticed. She was smirking to herself as she shut the door behind her, coming face to face with a tall wall. She glanced left then right before waiting to hear the sound of footsteps in the alley on the other side, there was none. Once she was happy that she was alone Effy tossed her bag over the wall before scaling it herself, even she had no idea how she managed – climbing had always been a strong point of hers.

She jumped down the other end, landing next to her bag, bending down she picked it up and slung it over her shoulder again, but not before she pulled her mobile out the front pocket. She flicked through her contacts, not even remembering half the people in there, she landing on Spencer’s number and hit the call button.

Holding the phone to her ear all she heard was the non-stop ringing tone, finally Spencer picked up, his voice warm in his usual smug greeting. “Why hello,” He said. Effy frowned lightly, not saying anything at first, Spencer didn’t mind at all because he continued speaking. “I suppose you’d like to meet later on? After school, my little bookworm?” He was teasing her, she had to laugh really, only she didn’t all he got was a tiny smile.

“Now, Starbucks, half an hour?” She questioned, Effy didn’t see the point in dragging out sentences, not when she could get her point across fine otherwise. She heard Spencer fiddling with a plastic bag over the phone, drugs most likely, he’d save some for her of course. “Skipping school? Rebel,” More teasing, Effy could hear the laughter in his tone as he carried on. “I’ll see you there.”

He got a slight moan in response before Effy hung up, barely catching the “Goodbye Effy.” He gave. She sighed to herself and started walking, out towards the back of the school – there was only houses at that end, if took her longer to get home but it was worth it if she didn’t get caught.

: i'm sure...
there is this boy i know.
he means a lot to me.
and yet i barely know him.
about a year we've been talking.
not including the long period we've just been though,
where we blanked one another totally.
i think he means a bit too much to me.
i'm sure i mean little to him.
because he would make an effort otherwise wouldn't he?
he doesn't really care, i can tell.
but that doesn't stop me wishing he did, even if it was just a teeny bit.
caring is caring.

: wonderwoman
i passed a woman today,
on a street not far from my home,
look like she belonged far from here,
out of place with her rabbit coat,
her eyes like lumps of rock,
something in them suggesting a lack of soul,
she looked like she belonged far from here,
chriogenically frozen from the 70s,
her footsteps made so sense to my ears,
erratic and everywhere.

i passed a woman today.
she is meant to be dead.

---

this was a bit random.
i did bump into a woman like that today.
she didn't have a rabbit coat though.
she looked like a 'Delihah' - a temptress.
i like to think of her as wonderwoman though.
she seemed really amazing.
i wonder who she is?
